Recommended Lawn Care:

Ask the Pro

Q:        What is the best type of grass seed?

A:         Greenscape Gardens highly recommends turf type tall fescue for most lawn conditions.  This particular type of grass has a deeper root system; it is thereby capable of adapting to our heavy clay soils.  It is also highly disease and insect resistant.

Q:        At what setting should I mow my lawn?

A:         During the spring, we recommend mowing cool season lawns at 2 ½ - 3 inches.  Mow only 1/3 of the grass stem at a time.  Mow at the highest setting during the summer.  This will enable the grass to shade itself.  The last mowing of the season should be adjusted back to 2 ½ inches.

Q:        How do I reduce thatch in the lawn?

A:         Thatch is caused by an imbalance in the Ph of the soil (too technical to get into now).  Mowing only 1/3 of the grass blade per mowing is a start.  Liming the lawn to correct the acidity of the soil and aerating the lawn yearly will significantly reduce the amount of thatch in a cool season lawn.

Q:        How long do I water my lawn?

A:         Established lawns need approximately 1” of water per week.  Check the amount of water needed per area by setting a coffee can in the lawn to gauge the amount of time necessary to collect 1” of water and irrigate accordingly thereafter.

Q:        My lawn has a brown cast, what’s wrong?

A:         Most likely problem is a dull lawn mower blade.  We recommend sharpening the blade several times during the season.  This will reduce the tearing of the grass blade and further reduce disease problems from occurring.  Plus in the summer months be on the lookout for disease problems.

Q:        When is the best time to seed my lawn?

A:         Cool season grasses should be seeded in early fall.  Preparation work should be done in early September (Labor Day Weekend).  Preparation should include multiple passes of aeration, removal of heavy amounts of thatch and over seeding.  That’s just the beginning.  Maintain a constant moisture level to the soil.  Keep the ground moist but don’t over water.

Q:        How much grass seed do I need?

A:         I recommend seeding with Turf Type Tall Fescues at a rate of 4-5# per thousand square feet for over seeding.  Bare ground seeding should be done at a rate of 10-12# per thousand square feet.  Light amounts of straw should be spread in bare seeding to reduce erosion and stimulate germination
